Frequently Asked Questions - Caldwell Drywall

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about our drywall services, process, and what to expect during your project.

What's the difference between hanging, taping, and texturing?

Hanging means putting up the drywall sheets on your walls and ceilings. We screw them to the wood frame of your house.

Taping is covering all the joints (where two pieces of drywall meet) with tape and joint compound (mud) to make the walls look smooth. We usually do this in 2-3 coats.

Texturing is the final step where we add texture to your walls and ceilings to give them the finish you want - like orange peel, knockdown, or smooth.

How long does a typical drywall project take?

It depends on the size of your project:

  • Average bedroom: 1-2 days total
  • Whole house (2,000 sq ft): 5-7 days total
  • Large custom home: 2-3 weeks

We need drying time between coats, so we can't rush the process. Each coat of mud needs to dry completely (usually 24 hours) before we can apply the next one.

What's a Level 4 vs Level 5 finish?

Level 4 is our standard finish - perfect for most rooms that will be painted. All joints are taped and smooth, ready for paint.

Level 5 is our premium finish - we add an extra skim coat over the entire wall. This is best for rooms with lots of natural light or if you want a really smooth, high-end look.

Most homes use Level 4, but we recommend Level 5 for main living areas in custom homes.

Do I need to move my furniture?

For new construction, there's usually no furniture to worry about.

For remodels, we'll work with you to:

  • Move furniture to the center of the room and cover it
  • Work one room at a time when possible
  • Protect your belongings with plastic sheeting
  • Clean up dust daily to keep your home livable
Will you make a mess? How do you clean up?

Drywall work does create dust, especially during sanding. Here's how we keep things clean:

  • We use plastic sheeting to protect your floors and furniture
  • Our crews clean up debris daily - we don't leave a mess overnight
  • We organize all leftover materials neatly
  • Final cleanup includes sweeping and removing all our materials

Remember: "Cleanliness reflects our attention to detail" - that's our company motto!

Can you match existing texture in my home?

Yes! Texture matching is one of our specialties, especially for remodel work.

We'll look at your existing texture and create a sample patch first. Once you approve how it looks, we'll texture the rest of your project to match.

Common textures we match include orange peel, knockdown, and skip trowel patterns.

What's fire taping and do I need it?

Fire taping is a special type of taping required by building codes in certain areas like garages. It helps slow down fires from spreading.

You need fire taping if:

  • Your garage is attached to your house
  • Building codes require it in your area
  • Your plans specifically call for it

We handle all the code requirements - you don't need to worry about the technical details.

When should insulation be installed?

Insulation must be installed and inspected before we hang drywall.

Here's the correct order:

  • All electrical, plumbing, and HVAC rough-in work
  • Four-way inspection passes
  • Insulation installed
  • Insulation inspection passes
  • Then we can start hanging drywall

We coordinate with your general contractor to make sure everything happens in the right order.

How much does drywall cost?

Drywall costs depend on several factors:

  • Square footage - bigger projects cost more
  • Ceiling height - tall ceilings take more time
  • Finish level - Level 5 costs more than Level 4
  • Texture type - some textures are more complex
  • Project type - remodels often cost more than new construction

We provide free estimates with no surprises. Every estimate includes materials, labor, and cleanup.

Do you guarantee your work?

Absolutely! We stand behind our work with:

  • Quality guarantee - if something isn't right, we'll fix it
  • Workmanship warranty - we cover defects in our installation
  • 30-day follow-up - we check back to make sure you're happy
  • Professional crews - all our teams are performance-rated

Your satisfaction is our priority. If you're not happy, we're not done.
